Benefits of Relaxation Therapy

Updated: Dec 15, 2020

Is your mind constantly switched on? Are you constantly running at full steam ahead? Get and R 'n' R lately? Trouble sleeping? Read on...

Relaxation Therapy isn't a 'new' treatment, it's been around for 'forever'....

We all need to relax more, not just as individuals but as a whole. Life just keeps getting busier and busier and we as a society have forgotten how to just 'be'. Be still, be mindful. Not have modern contraptions going 100% of the time.

The word 'stress' seems to be thrown around quite liberably now. This is stressful, that's making me stressed, 'you' are making me stressed, my job is stressful, the traffic on the road is getting me stressed. I've even heard a small child once say how stressed they were, and they habn't even started school yet.

Our brains are in constant overload. So what happens to our bodies when we are in this state of constantly being 'switched' on? There is this wonderful hormone called cortisol which was originally meant for running away from dinosaurs and such (great for sports however). It's the 'fight-or-flight' response (stress response) which is a physiological reaction that occurs in response to a perceived harmful event, attack, or threat to survival first described in the 1920s by American physiologist Walter Cannon.

We don't have dinosaurs to run from anymore to release the cortisol from our bodies so it can linger and cause issues such as:

* You don't sleep well and if you do sleep, you awake unrefreshed and are still tired.

* You gain weight, especially around your belly.

* Impairs immune system. You seem to catch whatever cold or infection is around.

* Cortisol raises blood sugar so you crave unhealthy foods.

* Sex drive nose dives into the depths of the abyse.

* Stomach issues.

* You feel stressed...anxious....depressed.

* And too long an overload of cortisol and you'll get adrenal fatigue (adrenals, little glands on top of your kidneys), increased sensitivity to pain, headaches and backaches.

In our stressed society instead of learning how to unwind we go for (or try) for instant relief we reach for the bottle of pills, alcohol, drugs and other medications. We all want instant gratification, instead we swap one problem (or mask it) for another. It appears that people just don't want to put in the work for themselves. Hmmmm, put in the work to destress or get ill and maybe have a heart attack??

So how do we unwind and destress?

Exercise, trying a gentle walk if you don't like the gym. Get out in beautiful surroundings at the same time. I'm too tired I hear, that's cortisol talking, walk anyway! Gentle movements like yoga, Tai Chi or Qi Gong. Listening to relaxing music. Meditation. Hypnosis. Hypnosis is not by definition relaxation, although therapeutic hypnosis can be profoundly relaxing.

I have a FREE Relaxation Hypnosis Meditation Mp3 on my 'Freebies Page' you may like to try to see if it helps. Let me know how you go.
